The NHL Expansion Draft 2021 is an exciting event that allows a new team to build its roster by selecting players from existing teams in the league. If you’re a hockey fan eagerly anticipating this event, you might be wondering when it will take place and what to expect. Let’s dive into the details to get you up to speed on the Expansion Draft and how it all works.
The NHL Expansion Draft is scheduled to take place on July 21, 2021. This event will pave the way for the Seattle Kraken, the NHL’s newest team, to select players from the other 30 teams in the league. Each existing team will have the opportunity to protect a certain number of players, ensuring that they can retain key members of their roster while making other players available for selection by the Kraken.
For the Expansion Draft, each team will have to submit a list of protected players to the NHL. The rules dictate which players are eligible for protection, with teams typically being able to protect a combination of forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders. Players with no-movement clauses in their contracts must be protected unless they agree to waive these clauses.
The Seattle Kraken will then have the chance to choose one player from each team, except for the Vegas Golden Knights, who are exempt from this draft as the most recent expansion team. The Kraken must select a minimum of 14 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goaltenders. This process allows the Kraken to build a competitive roster right from the start, giving them a solid foundation as they enter the league for the upcoming season.
Teams will need to strategize carefully when deciding which players to protect and which to make available for selection. Factors such as player performance, contract status, and team chemistry will all come into play as teams make these crucial decisions. Coaches and general managers will work together to ensure that their team remains strong while also planning for the potential loss of players in the Expansion Draft.
The Seattle Kraken, on the other hand, will need to assess the available players and make strategic picks to form a well-rounded team. Building a roster from scratch is no easy task, but the Expansion Draft provides the Kraken with a unique opportunity to select players who can make an immediate impact and help establish the team’s identity in the league.
As a fan, the Expansion Draft is a chance to witness the birth of a new team and see how they shape their roster for the upcoming season. It’s a thrilling time for hockey enthusiasts as they speculate on which players will be chosen and how the new team will fare in their inaugural season. The Expansion Draft adds an extra layer of excitement to the NHL offseason, keeping fans engaged and eager for the start of the new season.
So mark your calendars for July 21, 2021, and get ready to witness the NHL Expansion Draft as the Seattle Kraken take their first steps towards building a competitive team in the league. It’s sure to be a memorable event that will set the stage for an exciting season of hockey ahead.
