With the NHL playoffs just around the corner, many fans are eager to understand how this season’s postseason will unfold. The NHL, like many other sports leagues, has had to adapt its playoff format due to the unique circumstances brought about by the ongoing pandemic. So, let’s break down how the NHL playoffs are going to work this year and what fans can expect.
Unlike the traditional playoff format, which typically involves 16 teams competing in best-of-seven series, the 2021 NHL playoffs will feature a different structure. This year, the top four teams from each division will qualify for the playoffs, resulting in a total of 16 teams vying for the coveted Stanley Cup.
The top four teams in each division will compete in inter-divisional matchups during the first two rounds of the playoffs. The first-place team in each division will face the fourth-place team, while the second-place team will take on the third-place team. The winners of these matchups will then advance to the second round.
Once the second round is complete, the four remaining teams will be reseeded based on their regular-season records, with the highest remaining seed facing the lowest remaining seed and the other two teams squaring off against each other. The winners of these matchups will then move on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, the two victorious teams from each division will face off in a best-of-seven series to determine the divisional champions. These champions will then advance to the Stanley Cup Semifinals, where they will compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Stanley Cup Final will feature the two conference champions battling it out in a best-of-seven series to determine the winner of the Stanley Cup. The team that emerges victorious will etch their name in hockey history and hoist the coveted Stanley Cup trophy.
It’s important to note that the NHL playoffs are always full of excitement and unpredictability. Anything can happen in the quest for the Stanley Cup, and this year’s playoffs are sure to be no exception. With teams vying for glory and players giving it their all on the ice, fans can expect thrilling matchups and unforgettable moments throughout the postseason.
So, as the NHL playoffs get underway, be sure to tune in and cheer on your favorite teams. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual observer, the excitement of playoff hockey is something that unites fans of the sport and creates lasting memories. Get ready for a wild ride as the NHL playoffs showcase the best of the best in hockey and crown a new champion in the quest for Stanley Cup glory.
