The Evolution of Oklahoma City Thunder Jersey Number 3
The Oklahoma City Thunder, previously known as the Seattle Supersonics, have seen a total of 51 jersey numbers worn by players since the team’s inception in the 1967-68 season. To honor the players who donned these numbers, Thunder Wire is delving into the history of jersey numbers and the players associated with them throughout the franchise’s existence.
One of the jersey numbers under the spotlight is No. 3, which has been worn by 20 players in the Thunder’s history. The eleventh player to sport this number was Nate Robinson, marking the beginning of the Thunder era for this jersey. Robinson, a former guard for the University of Washington, was selected as the 21st overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 2005 NBA draft.
Despite being initially drafted by the Suns, Robinson was traded to the New York Knicks along with Quentin Richardson in exchange for Kurt Thomas and Dijon Thompson on draft night. He later played for the Boston Celtics before being traded to the Thunder in 2010 for J.R. Giddens, Eddie House, Henry Walker, and draft assets.
Robinson’s tenure with the Thunder was brief, as he only played four games wearing jersey No. 3 before being waived by the team. Subsequently, he joined the Golden State Warriors as a free agent. During his short stint with the Thunder, Robinson averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 assists per game.
While the Supersonics jerseys may not be a part of the current franchise history, they remain an integral part of the Thunder’s heritage. As the exploration of jersey numbers continues, each number unveils a unique story of the players who represented it on the court, contributing to the rich tapestry of the Thunder’s basketball legacy.
