Boston Celtics Jersey History: No. 4 Sonny Hertzberg (1949-51)
The Boston Celtics, a storied franchise in the NBA, have a rich history of players donning various jersey numbers since their inception in the Basketball Association of America (BAA). Over the years, more than 500 players have worn the Celtics jersey, with a total of 68 different numbers used, in addition to three non-numerical series jerseys. To honor the legacy of these players, Celtics Wire is delving into the extensive history of jersey numbers and the players associated with them throughout the team’s existence.
Among the array of jersey numbers, 25 have been retired by the Celtics to immortalize some of the greatest players in the team’s history. One such player is Sidney “Sonny” Hertzberg, who was the third of 31 players to wear jersey number 4. Hertzberg, a product of City College of New York, began his professional basketball career as a free agent with the New York Knicks during the BAA’s inaugural season in 1946-47.
After a brief stint with the Knicks, Hertzberg moved on to play for the Washington Capitols before eventually being traded to the Celtics in 1949 in exchange for Chick Halbert. His time with the Celtics marked the conclusion of his BAA career, just before the league transitioned into the NBA. During his two seasons with Boston, Hertzberg showcased his skills, averaging 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game while proudly wearing the number 4 jersey.
Known for his on-court leadership and basketball IQ, Hertzberg earned the moniker of “the second coach on the floor,” a testament to his strategic understanding of the game. His contributions to the Celtics organization and his impact on the court have left a lasting legacy within the franchise’s history.
As fans reminisce about the players who have left an indelible mark on the Celtics’ legacy, the stories of individuals like Sonny Hertzberg serve as a reminder of the team’s rich heritage and the talented athletes who have graced the parquet floor over the years.
