U.S. Men’s Soccer Faces New Zealand at TQL Stadium

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer team is making a return to Cincinnati as they gear up to face New Zealand at TQL Stadium. Interim Head Coach Mikey Varas is currently leading the team as U.S. Soccer continues its search for a permanent replacement for former Head Coach Gregg Berhalter, who departed in July following a disappointing performance in the 2024 Copa América. Reports suggest that Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, a seasoned coach with experience at top-tier clubs like Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham, is on the verge of being named as the new head coach.

Addressing the media ahead of a training session in Cincinnati, Varas acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the appointment of a new coach but emphasized the team’s focus on the upcoming game against New Zealand. Varas highlighted his role as interim leader, stating that he aims to provide opportunities for players who have demonstrated hard work and deserve a chance to showcase their abilities to the future head coach.

Anticipating the playing style of the New Zealand team, known as the ‘All Whites,’ Varas expects them to exhibit dynamic movement on the field, frequently changing positions and delivering attacking crosses into the box. While this marks Varas’ first time leading the USMNT in Cincinnati, he expressed admiration for TQL Stadium and its training facilities, commending FC Cincinnati and the city for their strong support of soccer.

TQL Stadium has become a familiar venue for the men’s national team, with this match marking its fourth appearance at the stadium and the fifth time the city has hosted the team overall. The last encounter in Cincinnati took place in July 2023 during the Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals, which saw a thrilling double-header featuring victories by Jamaica over Guatemala and the USA over Canada on penalty kicks.

The upcoming match against New Zealand is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on TNT, Universo, Max, and Peacock, with live Spanish-language audio coverage available on Fútbol de Primera radio platforms. The game presents an opportunity for the USMNT to showcase their talent and continue their preparations under Varas’ guidance as they aim for success on the international stage.
