Lakers to Honor Jerry West with No. 44 Band on Uniforms
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to pay tribute to the legendary Jerry West by featuring his iconic No. 44 on their uniforms for all 82 games of the upcoming season. The team recently announced that players will don a special band displaying West’s number on the left shoulder of their jerseys throughout the 2024-25 season.
Jerry West, who spent his entire 14-year Hall of Fame career with the Lakers before transitioning into coaching and a successful executive role within the organization, passed away in June at the age of 86. This gesture serves as a fitting homage to a pivotal figure in Lakers history.
Known as one of the greatest shooting guards in NBA history, West guided the Lakers to nine NBA Finals appearances, clinching the championship in the 1971-72 season. A 14-time All-Star, he holds the impressive distinction of ranking eighth in league history with an average of 27.03 points per game.
Fondly referred to as “Mr. Clutch” for his ability to excel in crucial moments, West earned 12 All-NBA team selections and was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite being on the losing side – a unique honor that remains unmatched. Beyond his playing days, West played a pivotal role in shaping the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s, leading them to five championships and laying the groundwork for the successful Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O’Neal era, which secured three consecutive titles.
In addition to the jersey tribute, the Lakers will also commemorate Jerry West on the opening night of the regular season when they face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 22. Fans attending the game will receive a special West No. 44 jersey giveaway as part of the evening’s festivities. This event promises to be a poignant moment for Lakers fans as they honor the enduring legacy of a true basketball icon.
